The Glenlivet began as a small farm distillery producing illicit spirits to avoid excessive taxation. In 1822, King George IV visited Edinburgh and was so captivated by its flavor that he insisted the whisky be served at his royal banquet, despite its illegal status. This encounter led him to reform the laws, allowing distilleries to operate legally with a modest licensing fee.

In 1824, the founder of The Glenlivet became the first to obtain this license, establishing Scotland’s first legal distillery. As its reputation for exceptional quality grew, neighboring distilleries began capitalizing on the name, leading to a legal battle. The court ruled that while the name ‘Glenlivet’—meaning ‘smoothly flowing valley’—was public domain, only the original distillery could call itself ‘The Glenlivet.’ To this day, the brand proudly emphasizes the definite article ‘The.’

The Glenlivet 15 Year Old French Oak is crafted with meticulous care by the Malt Master, who ensures the influence of the cask is perfectly balanced to evoke subtle notes of apple. Serving as a refined standard for single malts, its smooth character makes it a highly recommended choice for those beginning their journey into whisky.
