The Glenlivet began as a small farm distillery producing illicit spirits to avoid excessive taxation. However, in 1822, King George IV visited Edinburgh and was so captivated by its flavor that he insisted the whisky be served at his royal banquet, despite its illegal status. This encounter led him to reform the laws, allowing distilleries to operate legally with a modest licensing fee.

In 1824, the founder of The Glenlivet became the first to obtain this license, establishing Scotland’s first legal distillery. As its reputation for exceptional quality grew, neighboring distilleries began capitalizing on the name, leading to a legal battle. The court ruled that while anyone could use the name ‘Glenlivet’—meaning ‘smoothly flowing valley’—only the original distillery could call itself ‘The Glenlivet.’ To this day, the brand proudly emphasizes the definite article ‘The.’

The Glenlivet 12 Year Old is matured in a combination of European and American oak, resulting in a smooth, vanilla-forward profile that serves as the gold standard for single malts. It is highly recommended as the perfect starting point for those new to the world of whisky.
